A retrospective exhibition by artist Paul Mason, exploring Recurrent Themes in his work over the past 50 years as he returns to Astley Hall where it all began.
A word from the artist…
I had my first professional exhibition at Astley Hall in 1974. Now, 50 years later, it’s exciting to be able to show the development of my studio practice since then. The primary objective of this exhibition is to demonstrate the various paths my lines of enquiry have taken me down over the years.
I have attempted to show examples that are key elements in my work over a period of forty plus years and although it would be impossible to show everything in the space provided I feel that the salient points have been covered. I have had my work published in several books and specialist magazines on fine art ceramics and have been included in exhibitions in Hungary, Denmark, Germany, Croatia, USA, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and the UK.
During my postgraduate ceramics degree I became really interested in the technology of warfare from the development of medieval armour to the machinery usd in WW1, this has been a recurring theme in my work because of its ferocity and futility and the incredible melancholy associated with it.
Following this I specialised in printmaking on ceramic surfaces. The work has since developed into multi media assemblage incorporating ceramics with wood, metal and incidentally found objects.
Connected to this is a lifelong interest in all aspects of the natural world and how animals reptiles ,fishes, birds and insects have evolved to sustain their own lives and protect themselves from natural predation, I have considerable collections of fossils, bird and animal skulls and shells, these provide me with primary source material for drawing and producing moulds from which to construct three dimensional forms.
Most recently my attention has been drawn to the various ways that the human world population is impacting the natural world, ranging from the very well publicised pollution caused since the development of plastics in the early 20th century to the environmental damage inflicted by the mining of tin in Indonesia and Malaysia to that of Lithium mining in South America. Although there have been several conferences attempting to address the issues of world climate change and environmental damage, I feel that we have passed the point of no return and that all we can
do now is follow a damage limitation exercise.
The work shown will include ceramics, drawing, printmaking, multi media assemblage and collage.
